Heartmath Director of Health Partnerships & Senior Trainer

Many people don't realize the degree to which signals from one's heart regulate the brain. The Heartmath Institute has researched the psychophysiology of stress, resilience, and the interactions between the heart and brain for over 28 years.

Based on this research, the Heartmath Institute has developed technologies to help people self-regulate the communication between heart and brain. Heartmath trainers teach people how they can learn to be in harmony with their heart intelligence to reduce stress and reactivity, and enhance intuition; a mission whose ramifications extend as far as United Nations peace imperatives.

Learn about the remarkable science of heart intelligence and how our hearts far exceed the mere descriptor of a pump.

This interview is a continuation of the conversation from episode 40, in which Bryan challenges each of us to use his method to take on any challenge, succeed, and change our lives.

Take on any challenge, succeed, and change your life with Bryan Falchuk.

Bryan Falchuk overcame adversity, lost nearly 100 pounds, ran a marathon, dramatically change his diet and created an approach to help others live a better life, every day. That way is Do a Day.

Like so many people, Bryan has faced challenges in life, like obesity, depression, work stress, the responsibilities of parenthood, the potential of losing his wife to illness, and more. And he struggled, like anyone else. Through his struggle, he learned the secret to not just overcoming any individual challenge, but creating a life of achievement, happiness and harmony. In Do a Day, you will learn how to make each day
contribute to your goals so you can live the life you want to live — a better life.

Do a Day frees you of the burden and judgment of yesterday‘s choices while relieving you of the pressure of what tomorrow may bring. By teaching you how to identify your true motivation and how to use that to focus on what you have to do today, Do a Day will help you change your life.

Clinic and community come together to fight chronic disease by executing community-based strategies that proactively link and support clinical services.

Trina Radske-Suchan serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Health Officer for Community Health Partners (CHP, and d.b.a. Core Health Partners in the Southwest Florida region).
NWI is proud to join Core Health Partners, The Help a Diabetic Child Foundation, and Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida in developing the Von Arx Family Foundation Southwest Florida Diabetes & Wellness Conference, which will take place on November 4, 2018.

Ms. Suchan received her Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Iowa and has dedicated most of her career to preventing behaviors leading to death, disability and rising health care costs. She’s done that by leading community health efforts to address chronic disease, health disparities, and health-related concerns of aging populations.

Physical therapists are uniquely educated and trained to adapt health care recommendations to the community environment where individuals live, work, learn, and play. Her expertise as a physical therapist was essential in the development of the first YMCA-hospital partnership nationally that created the YMCA Healthy Living Center (Y-HLC) in Clive, Iowa employing and administering physical therapy and medically-integrated programs and services under YMCA management. As the Y-HLC Medical Program Executive from 2009-2017, she led the Y-HLC medically-integrated efforts reaching over 1,160 provider referrals. Y-HLC membership peaked at 8,300 members and nearly half of the membership population was driven by a medical referral. She averaged 160 referrals per month with the highest month achieving 257 referrals. She managed over 20 medical programs that delivered evidence-based educational curriculum, self-management training, behavior modification, group and independent exercise related to disease or impairment, and ongoing support through health coaching.

Trina works to build broader approaches to chronic disease management through partnerships with health care systems, government agencies, non-profits and corporate partners as well as build collaborations to enhance support for the clinic to community health model. Today, CHP builds environments where clinic and community come together to fight chronic disease by executing community-based strategies that proactively link and support clinical services. As part of community-based integrated teams, CHP leads the design and development of integrated clinical and community screening and referral pathways, develops network hubs that centralize processes and enhance communications, and adapts the environment to promote healthy behaviors and improved health outcomes for individuals and populations of all ages, including those with complex health and functional needs.

Trina has always been involved in lifelong health and wellness activities on a personal level. She is a 2x Canadian Jr. National champion and still holds the Canadian Jr. National meet record. She came to the US on a full track and field scholarship to Iowa State University and earned 3-time All American honors and was a 2-time Drake Relays Champion. She was named the Female Strength and Conditioning All-American Athlete of the Year in 1996.  Ms. Suchan says, “Being a competitive athlete teaches you to be committed to a process, be purposeful in team work, tenacious in goal achievement, and understand the importance of taking care of your body”.

Look for Jessica at the Von Arx Family Foundation Southwest Florida Diabetes & Wellness Conference in Naples, Florida on November 4, 2018. She will be discussing the Importance of Sleep & Living with Diabetes.

When I interviewed Jessica Davenport back in episode 34, there was so much to talk about that we went way over time. Episode 45 is the rest our talk, and the timing is perfect to share it with you. On November 4th, 2018, Jessica will be speaking the Von Are Family Foundation Southwest Florida Diabetes and Wellness Conference in Naples, Florida. The National Wellness Institute is proud to partner with the Help a Diabetic Child Foundation to bring you this event, the largest SWFL Diabetes & Wellness Conference to date. Click here to get details about the conference.

Jessica Davenport, BS, is the founder and owner of Wellness Dreamer, a health and wellness company she created in 2017. Jessica holds a Bachelors degree in Wellness Leadership from the University of South Florida. She is a certified Health & Wellness Coach through Wellcoaches and a certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise.

Jessica has worked in the health and wellness industry for 11 years and has held positions with a variety of companies ranging from a global human capital management (HCM) software company to one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States. Prior to founding Wellness Dreamer, she was the Wellness Specialist for PSCU, a Credit Union Service Organization where she managed all the wellness programs for over 1700 employees. In 2016, Jessica was instrumental in helping PSCU become one of the first companies in the US to receive the coveted Health Champion Designation from the American Diabetes Association.

Jessica is extremely passionate about health and wellness as a whole but has a particular interest in the areas of sleep health and diabetes. Her interest in sleep health stems from the fact that she knows exactly what it’s like to be a sleepy person. Just prior to college Jessica began experiencing the invisible symptoms of multiple sleep disorders. She lived with these symptoms for over a decade until they were eventually diagnosed as sleep apnea in 2007 and narcolepsy type II in 2010.

Because of her battle with sleep disorders, she felt the need to create more awareness in her own community. In 2014, she co-founded Sleep Tampa Bay, a grassroots organization dedicated to advocating for sleep health and sleep disorder awareness in the Tampa Bay area. As for her passion for diabetes, it began during her time working as a health coach for an insurance company where she gained experience coaching many patients living with diabetes. But her passion for diabetes education and advocacy grew exponentially when her son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2016, at the age of 6. Since her son’s diagnoses Jessica has been working diligently to advocate for her son and for others who live with diabetes.

In 2017, Jessica united her 11 years of experience in the wellness industry with her personal experiences and passion for change to create Wellness Dreamer, a health and wellness company that offers one-on-one and group wellness coaching, consulting services for corporate wellness clients, personal training, and professional speaking services.

Dr. Tori Jennings and Dr. Annie Wetter discuss “Cycling Without Age,” an innovative community program to engage and connect with our seniors.

In this interview, Dr. Tori Jennings and Dr. Annie Wetter discuss Cycling Without Age, a non-profit volunteer-run program that takes older adults and adults with differing abilities on free bicycle rides in a trishaw. Tori initiated the Stevens Point Chapter of Cycling Without Age, and Annie is a partner in this effort. The Stevens point chapter of Cycling Without Age is part of a world wide movement to connect older adults to cycling, the outdoors, and the community.

Tori Jennings, PhD (left), is a cultural anthropologist. She has been teaching anthropology
at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for 8 years as an adjunct professor. In addition to teaching, Tori was elected to the Stevens Point City Council in 2017. From 2015 to 2017, she served as chair of the city’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

Annie Wetter, PhD (right), is president of Portage

County CAN, a coalitiondedicated to promoting healthy eating and physical activity. CAN does this primarily by fostering a partnership between individuals, agencies, and resources in the community to increase the capac

ity of existing efforts and spark new initiatives among stakeholders. Cycling Without Age is a perfect example of this work.

Annie is also Professor of Nutrition in the School of Health Promotion
& Human Development at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

I only recently discovered the Cycling Without Age program, but the crucial social connection it makes with seniors makes it unquestionably clear how important it is. As you listen to this interview, imagine how having this program available in every community could benefit not just its seniors, but all of us.

Jessica Davenport, aka "The Narcolepsy Whisperer" discusses sleep disorders, their diagnosis and surprisingly common mis-diagnoses, and how critical it is that we make getting quality sleep a priority.

Jessica Davenport, BS, is the founder and owner of Wellness Dreamer, a health and wellness company she created in 2017. She is a leading advocate for sleep health and sleep disorders in the South Florida area and has spent 10 years in the health and wellness industry.

Jessica holds a bachelor's degree in Wellness Leadership from the University of South Florida. She is a certified Health & Wellness Coach through Wellcoaches and a certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise. Jessica has held positions with a variety of companies ranging from a global human capital management (HCM) software company to one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States. Prior to founding Wellness Dreamer, she was the Wellness Specialist for a Credit Union Service Organization where she managed all the wellness programs for over 1700 employees.

Jessica is extremely passionate about health and wellness as a whole but has a particular and focused interest in sleep health and sleep disorders. If you ask her she’ll tell you she’s a “Sleep Geek”. This interest stems from the fact that she knows exactly what it’s like to be a sleepy person. Living with the invisible symptoms of multiple sleep disorders for over a decade, they culminated just prior to college and were eventually diagnosed as sleep apnea in 2007 and narcolepsy type II in 2010.

Because of her battle with sleep disorders, she felt the need to create more awareness in her own community. In 2014, in conjunction with Project Sleep, Jessica hosted the very first Sleep Walk Tampa Bay event. In 2015, she co-founded Sleep Tampa Bay, a grassroots organization dedicated to advocating for sleep health and sleep disorder awareness in the Tampa Bay area. Since 2015 Sleep Tampa Bay has hosted community events twice a year where they help others wake up to the importance of sleep and also how to recognize if they have a sleep disorders.

In 2017, Jessica united her 10 years of experience in the wellness industry with her personal experiences and passion for change to create Wellness Dreamer, a health and wellness company that offers one-on-one and group wellness coaching, consulting services for corporate wellness clients, personal training, and professional speaking services.

Learn about Lorie’s techniques to help you become the Hero and the Author of your own life story for getting “un-stuck” and experiencing self-discovery and personal growth.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lorie Marsh, Writer. Speaker. Visual Storyteller. Awareness Igniter. Soul Booster. Her mission is to show how to use your story to tap into your inner wisdom and move you forward on your path with more clarity, focus, and purpose.

After two decades in indie film, theater, multi-platform narratives, and “script doctoring,” Lorie Marsh is steeped in Storytelling. Everything is a story to her. She developed her self-inquiry framework from a personal need, “I found myself at an undeniable dead end on a path I’d hacked at for almost 20 years. It was scary and overwhelming to feel I was in a free fall, having no ‘map’ anymore for myself. I came to realize, though, that I could find my way back to center by using the skills I’d developed over all those years: I needed to review my life as the epic story it is, and I’d find my answers.” She writes, speaks, and creates workshops to guide others from their day-to-day Hero views to their higher level Creator/Author perspective in order to tap their inner wisdom, find center and focus, and map out their next chapters in purposeful ways.

Dr. Gail C. Christopher is an award winning social change agent and former Senior Advisor and Vice President of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF), one of the world’s largest philanthropies.

She is the visionary for and architect of the WKKF led Truth Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) effort for America. TRHT is an adaptation of the globally recognized Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) model. TRHT evolved from the decade long WKKF America Healing, racial equity and racial healing initiative, designed and led by Dr. Christopher. Over the last ten years she has had responsibility for several other areas of foundation programming. These include, Food, Health and Well-Being, Leadership, Public Policy, Community Engagement and place-based funding in New Orleans and New Mexico.

In August of 2017, Dr. Christopher left her leadership position with WKKF to launch the Maryland based Ntianu Center for Healing and Nature; and to devote more time to writing and speaking on issues of health, racial healing and human capacity for caring. She is currently Chair of the Board of the Trust for America’s Health and a Fellow of The National Academy of Public Administration.

Drawing on four decades of experience and leadership as an award-winning social change agent meeting the needs of diverse populations, Dr. Christopher makes a compelling case for putting wellness and well-being at the center of public narratives about health and healing.

Jessica Cox was born without arms. The doctors do not know why she was born “differently-abled.” But she does. Jessica has made achievements with her feet that most people only dream of. Now she shares her story with people around the world.

Born in 1983 in Sierra Vista, Arizona, Jessica has learned to live her life with her feet. There were many questions at the time about whether Jessica would be able to live a “normal” life. However, Jessica’s father has said he never shed a tear about her birth condition. He had full confidence in her potential. With the support of her parents and family, Jessica became confident in herself as an adult and continued to explore the world with her feet.

As a child, Jessica studied dance in her home town. When the first performance arrived, she asked to be put in the back row. Her dance teacher told her there was no back row. Tentatively she took the stage with the other students and performed her routine. When she finished, the applause from the audience gave her encouragement and the confidence to continue dancing for 14 years.Jessica’s parents eventually met a Taekwondo instructor named Jim Cunningham. His response when told of her birth condition was that she would be more than physically able and that only her attitude could hold her back. At the age of 14, Jessica earned her first Black Belt in the International Taekwondo Federation.

After graduating from high school, Jessica attended the University of Arizona where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. When talking about her degree, she frequently explains that psychology credits the way people think has a greater impact on their lives than a physical limitation.

During college, Jessica found an ATA Martial Arts club and resumed training in the sport of Taekwondo. Even though Jessica already had one black belt in a different style, she had to relearn all of the color belt material. The instructors created a curriculum that would be accessible to any future armless students. Jessica then became the first armless person to earn a black belt in the ATA.

Jessica’s most famous accomplishment was learning how to fly. It took three states, four airplanes, two flight instructors and a discouraging year to find the right aircraft: a 1946 415C Ercoupe Airplane. She received the Guinness World Record for being the first person certified to fly an airplane with only their feet.

Jessica now works as a motivational speaker. Jessica enjoys continuing to take on new challenges, the latest of which are slacklining and rock climbing. She gives back to the global disability community as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Nobel Prize winning NGO Handicap International. As a personal passion, she mentors children with limb differences and their parents.

Jessica’s TV appearances include: Inside Edition, The Ellen Show, Beyond Belief, CNN, Fox and Friends, BBC, Power ng Pinoy, and more. She has also appeared on local stations in Greece, Ghana, Kenya, the Philippines, South Korea, China, Japan, Mexico, Russia, England, Germany, France, and Brazil.
Brian speaks and consults with people and organizations to inspire more meaningful, strategic and joyful employee experiences. He believes that to change the culture of a workplace we must be focused on long-term objectives and that are supported with the right infusion of strategy, science, creativity, and “Edutainment”. Along with being the cofounder and facilitator of Wellness Underground, Brian has also started and led several networking groups across the U.S. around employee health & productivity and facilitated businesses and start-ups.

Brian holds a Bachelor’s degree in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise from Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon and a Master’s degree in Sport Psychology from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is a Certified Personal Trainer by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, has served as an adjunct faculty member for Elms College, and has extensive experience working with the Y.M.C.A and Boys & Girls Clubs where he focused his efforts on helping children develop an enjoyment of physical activity throughout their lives. When he is not trying to improve the culture, community leadership, experience and productivity of an organization, you can find him teaching his children about the finer points of woodworking and DIYing a Victorian house while making a carrot cake from scratch at the same time. Originally from Oregon, Brian calls Windsor, Connecticut home, with his wife and three daughters.

In this interview, he talks about what it means to be constructively disruptive, the differences in business cultures from coast to coast, cultivating a positive workplace, the discomfort of growth, and focusing on people first and foremost.

Many of those patients were rendered comatose by trauma, brain tumors, ruptured aneurysms, infections, or stroke. He thought he had a very good idea of how the brain generates consciousness, mind and spirit.
He spent a week in coma on a ventilator, his prospects for survival diminishing rapidly. On the seventh day, to the surprise of everyone, he started to awaken. Memories of his life had been completely deleted inside of the coma, yet he awoke with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm – more real than this earthly one! His older son advised him to write down everything he could remember about his journey, before he read anything about near-death experiences, physics or cosmology. Six weeks later, he completed his initial recording of his remarkable journey, totaling over 20,000 words in length. Then he started reading, and was astonished by the commonalities between his journey and so many others reported throughout all cultures, continents and millennia. His journey brought key insights to the mind-body discussion and to our human understanding of the fundamental nature of reality. His experience clearly revealed that we are conscious in spite of our brain – that, in fact, consciousness is at the root of all existence.

His story offers a crucial key to the understanding of reality and human consciousness. It will have a major effect on how we view spirituality, soul and the non-material realm. In analyzing his experience, including the scientific possibilities and grand implications, he envisions a more complete reconciliation of modern science and spirituality as a natural product. He has been blessed with a complete recovery that is inexplicable from the viewpoint of modern Western medicine.

His latest book on the subject of consciousness and reality, Living in a Mindful Universe: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Heart of Consciousness, co-authored with Karen Newell, will be released in Fall 2017 by Rodale Books. His first book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife (2012), debuted at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list and remained in the top ten for over a year. His second book, The Map of Heaven: How Science, Religion and Ordinary People are Proving the Afterlife (2014), explores humankind's spiritual history and the progression of modern science from its birth in the seventeenth century, showing how we forgot, and are now at last remembering, who we really are and what our destiny truly is. His story was featured in a series of peer-reviewed medical articles about near-death experiences (NDEs) in Missouri Medicine (2015), now published as the book The Science of Near-Death Experiences (edited by John C. Hagan III, 2017). It concludes with his chapter, “Near-Death Experiences, The Mind-Body Debate, and The Nature of Reality.”

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Alexander received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1980. He taught neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston for fifteen years, and has performed over 4,000 neurosurgical operations. During his academic career he authored or co-authored over 150 chapters and papers in peer reviewed journals, authored or edited five books on radiosurgery and neurosurgery, and made over 230 presentations at conferences and medical centers around the world.

Since Proof of Heaven was released in 2012, he has been a guest on The Dr. Oz Show, Super Soul Sunday with Oprah Winfrey, ABC-TV’s 20-20 and Good Morning America, FOX-TV’s FOX & Friends, and his story has been featured on the Discovery Channel and the Biography Channel. He has been interviewed for over 400 national and international radio and internet programs and podcasts. His books are available in over 40 countries worldwide, and have been translated into over 30 languages.

Since his NDE, Dr. Alexander has dedicated himself to sharing information about near-death experiences and other spiritually-transformative experiences, and what they teach us about consciousness and the nature of reality. He continues to promote further research on the unifying elements of science and spirituality, and together with Karen Newell, regularly teaches others ways to tap into our greater mind and the power of the heart to facilitate enhancement of healing, relationships, creativity, guidance, and more.
CO-FOUNDER, SACRED ACOUSTICS

As an innovator in the emerging field of brainwave entrainment audio meditation, Karen Newell empowers others in their journeys of self-discovery. Using Sacred Acoustics recordings, she teaches how to enter and engage your own consciousness in order to connect to inner guidance, achieve inspiration, improve wellness and develop intuition.

Her lifelong interest in ancient cultures and sacred sites catalyzed her drive to understand the purpose of our existence. She became fascinated with esoteric spiritual texts and sought alternate explanations for humanity’s collective history. In her search for answers, it was clear that direct experience is crucial. She was intrigued by accounts of ancient mystery schools, where initiates were led through a series of trials to learn the secrets of the universe. With no modern mystery school to attend, she enrolled in hands-on experiential courses to investigate and develop such skills as lucid dreaming, astral travel, telepathy, remote viewing, self-hypnosis, and different forms of energy healing, which bolstered her strong sense of inner knowing and alignment to her higher nature.

With focused dedication, she evaluated different theories and techniques through experiments in her daily life. Using this body of personal evidence, she cultivated a personal knowing, not only of the reality of the spiritual realm, but also a facile expertise in living that life of daily connection with universal consciousness. Among her greater attributes is the rare skill of discernment, of being able to separate the wheat from the chaff in navigating a pathway towards truth.

Meditation and heart awareness were central elements to her many different subjects of study. Her most successful forays into consciousness involved listening to sounds such as gongs, crystal bowls and tuning forks. Recordings containing binaural beats were particularly effective at minimizing distracting thoughts and restlessness, allowing her to finally reach the expanded states of awareness she sought. Karen joined with Kevin Kossi to create original recordings unmatched by any others either of them had experienced. Together, they created Sacred Acoustics.

At international workshops presented with best-selling author Dr. Eben Alexander, Karen demonstrates key practices of consciousness exploration: heart awareness, intention, maintaining neutrality, emotional management and cultivating internal knowing. She is co-author with Dr. Alexander of their latest book, Living in a Mindful Universe: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Heart of Consciousness (Rodale, 2017).

During 26-years working in the magazine and newspaper publishing field, Karen held key leadership positions involved with the direction and management of technology transitions faced by the print industry. Her business skills include web development, desktop publishing, communications, information technology, project management and strategic planning.
